Airway Management Resources

SPAN Home Page

Published here are airway resources and educational material, some of which formed part of the joint SPAN/SAG meeting in November 2014.

The APAGBI, jointly with the Difficult Airway Society, have published guidelines for approaching difficult mask ventilation, difficult tracheal intubation and ‘can’t intubate, can’t ventilate’. These guidelines, as with other DAS guidelines, underwent review in 2015 and have now been updated. They are available to download from the following websites;

Difficult Airway Society (DAS)

Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (APAGBI)

A slightly different approach to airway difficulty has been published by Tom Engelhardt, concentrating on unexpected airway difficulty and splitting the difficulty into 1.Bag-Mask Ventilation and 2.Tracheal Intubation . The short algorithms are available for viewing here, but should be interpreted with care out of context of the full article.

Dr Engelhardt has published extensively around the subject of paediatric airway management and information about some of his work can be viewed by clicking HERE. The author can be contacted through SPAN for more information if required/desired.

If planning to intubate through an LMA/SAD, there is available below a pictoral guide to the procedure along with two separate charts showing compatibility of endotracheal tube and LMA/SAD sizes.

Here is a clear sign designed to guide staff towards the paediatric airway rescue trolley in NHS Tayside. The designer has given permission for it to be used elsewhere if desired. Please e-mail nealwillis@nhs.net if planning to adopt the sign or if you are interested in a modified version of the sign for local use.
