This is a really nice information video about autism. It’s short enough to be watched in a free moment and the information is pitched at a very accessible level. A useful entry-level video to give a bit of insight.

Here we are pleased to share some work from a couple of teams within the UK:
Firstly, the guys and girls at NHS Tayside have teamed up with the charity Action for Sick Children Scotland (click here for website) to produce an information sheet for parents and carers. It outlines what to expect as a parent/carer when taking their child for an operation/anaesthetic, and captures that experience very well. The information sheet can be viewed by clicking here. Dr Grant Rodney (consultant anaesthetist, NHS Tayside) has been part of the team involved in producing this piece of work and is happy to be contacted by anyone who wishes to use the information sheet in their own trust. He can be contacted at grant.rodney@nhs.net.
Secondly, there is an excellent short film (about 6 minutes) which has been made by Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and one of their local charities “The Grand Appeal”. It is a professionally made animated film which features sound bites from children who agreed to be interviewed about their hospital experience. This link will take you to the film on YouTube.
Finally, the Scottish charity What? Why? Children in Hospital (click here for website) is continually adding new videos and resources to help patients and their families/carers with their visits to hospital. It’s well worth having a look to see what is out there for our young patients.

This charity has a host of useful videos aimed at preparing children for a trip to hospital, including having a cannula and having an anaesthetic. They have recently uploaded a whole load of new videos and it would be the ideal thing to share with colleagues involved in pre-assessment of children or preparing children for their visit to hospital.

Good news everyone!
There is now a freely available teaching package to assist in the introduction of capnography to recovery areas in your hospital. NAP4 (since 2011) and now the AAGBI recommend the use of capnography in all patients who are anaesthetised or sedated, regardless of where they are in a hospital.
A team of anaesthetists in Ninewells have agreed for their work to be freely available for use and adaptation to suit local needs.
See the tab to the right of the screen to find the resources. Please use, adapt and share freely with colleagues. This is important stuff!

We have just added 2 new documents to our ‘airway management resources’ page, well worth a look as guidance for anyone looking to update/review their airway equipment and/or set-up of their airway equipment. Drawing on expertise from around Scotland, the document is a consensus document on which all the authors agree. Hopefully it provides a useful framework for those interested in remaining current and safe in airway management. Please take a look and tell us what you think.
